Local Attractions
Lorne marks the beginning of treasured lifelong memories. A gateway to an Australian triumph, a commanding masterpiece, the aptly named Great Ocean Road.
Long renowned as one of Victoria’s most popular resort towns, only two hours drive from the Victorian capital of Melbourne, Lorne offers visitors an abundant selection of attractions and activities to satisfy people of all ages and interests.
Lorne is the perfect place to prepare yourself before you embark on your unforgettable journey along the Great Ocean Road’s meandering coastline, passing the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and other incredible natural wonders.
With one of the Great Ocean Road’s finest beaches on its doorstep that disappears into the crystal blue waters of Louttit Bay and the unspoilt rainforests of the Otway Ranges bordering the entire region, it is easy to understand why the Mediterranean style town enjoys patronage from visitors as diverse as the town itself.
Lorne comes alive when it hosts some of Australia’s most revered events in the annual Pier to Pub Swim & Mountain to Surf Run, held in January each year. It attracts hundreds of competitors and tens of thousands of spectators to witness world-class athletes vie for the coveted winning honours.
Every December during New Year festivities, Lorne also plays host to the Falls Festival, a musical feast of internationally renowned acts performing in front of more than 15,000 revellers that flock to the coastal mecca to see their favourite bands and artists.
Any time of the year, day or night, Lorne’s main street Mountjoy Parade is a hive of activity, with cosmopolitan cafés, restaurants, heritage pubs, art galleries, markets and boutique shops giving everyone a chance to take a break from sightseeing, surfing or a round of golf to enjoy some time beside the sea with fine food and a selection of wine from surrounding vineyard cellar doors before a stroll along the Lorne Pier.
Only minutes from the town centre is Angahook-Lorne State Park and Otway State Forest. Waterfalls and cascades hidden by dense rainforests open out into trickling fresh water streams, home to the endangered platypus. Bird watching and feeding, canoeing, fishing, walks through treetops, bike riding, horse riding and magnificent picnic spots are no more than 30 minutes from town.
Thrill seekers are by no means forgotten. Take a ride along the Great Ocean Road on a Harley Davidson and see the ships wrecked along its unforgiving coastline. Leap from a plane and see things from another perspective, skydive freefalling at more than 200 kilometres per hour or simply remain seated in the aircraft and soar along the coast flying directly over the Twelve Apostles.
The lure of Lorne’s incredible array of year-round delights will continue to be a magnet for those seeking the perfect mix of fun, relaxation and awe inspiring scenery. You’ll be perfectly prepared for the drive ahead, taking in the intensely undulated green and brown landscapes, the jagged cliff faces and the splendour that is the Great Ocean Road.
