Getting to Townsville

Townsville by Air

Townsville has its own airport located to the North in the suburb of Garbutt. It’s a North Queensland regional hub and offers direct flights to Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney to outlying North Queensland. Just 2.6 kilometres out of town, it’s easy to get into Townsville by driving or hiring a taxi.

Townsville by Car

Townsville is situated on the North Queensland coast between Cairns and Brisbane. It’s a four hour drive to Cairns and 16 hours from Brisbane, with many worthwhile stops along both routes. Drop into Mackay, Rockhampton or Gladstone along the way.

Other Transport

The Sunlander offers daily train service between Townsville and Brisbane – the journey takes 24 hours. Alternatively take the Tilt train or bus services that run the same route.

Townsville Attractions - Things to do on your trip

  1. Tour Maggie Island – Magnetic Island is the hot spot destination for those travelling to Townsville. Enjoy the most magnificent beaches and water sports, including snorkelling, diving or kayaking.
  2. Discover your wild side – there are a number of amazing wildlife species exclusive to Northern Queensland. Visit the Billabong sanctuary and learn more about the native fauna. Or check out Reef HQ to see some of the most unique species of fish.
  3. See the wacky side of the nearby surrounds – the Big Gumboot is located in Tully, appropriate for what could be the wettest part of the Australia with rainfall totals of over 1200 mm per year. This all takes place during the wet seasons between January and February.
  4. Find national parks galore – Hinchinbrook Island is Australia’s largest national park measuring 52 kilometres wide and 10 kilometres long.
  5. Enjoy the city beachside – take a stroll along the city promenade after a hard day’s shopping. Then head out for some great local cuisine at one of the many fabulous dining establishments.
